Tree trimming in Tallahassee
Deadwood out, limbs off the roof, and big oaks lightened up before storm season.
Common trimming jobs
- Deadwood removal. Dead limbs are the first to fall in wind. Taking them out is the most useful trim most trees can get.
- Roof and gutter clearance. Raising and shortening limbs that rub the roof, drop debris in gutters, or give squirrels a bridge.
- Crown raising. Lifting low limbs over driveways, sidewalks and lawns.
- Weight reduction. Shortening long, heavy limbs on big oaks so they're less likely to break.
- Storm prep. A combination of the above before hurricane season.
Trimming done right
Good pruning removes the right limbs at the right spot, just outside the collar where the branch meets the trunk, so the tree can seal the cut. Bad pruning, like topping a tree or stripping out most of its interior, leaves weak regrowth and can shorten the tree's life.
Climbing spikes shouldn't be used on trees that are being kept, since they wound the trunk. Ask how the crew will climb if it's a tree you care about.
Trees near power lines
Lines running between utility poles are your electric provider's responsibility. Never trim near them yourself. Trees around the service line from the pole to your house can often be handled by a tree company.
What it costs
Trimming usually runs from under $100 for a small tree to $1,700 or more for a tall tree over a roof, with an average around $475 per tree. Trimming several trees in one visit usually lowers the per-tree price. See the cost guide.
